  3. in the 1960s, with its emphasis on socially
  4. conscious lyrics, first in the folk music
  5. tradition and, beginning in 1965, in an
  6. individualistic rock style, had great
  7. influence on the development of Western
  8. popular music. Dylan's early songs, on his
  9. albums Freewheelin' 1963 and The Times They
  10. Are A-Changin' 1964, were associated with the
  11. US civil-rights movement and antiwar protest.
  12. When he first used an electric rock band he
  13. was criticized by purists, but his electric
  14. albums, Highway 61 Revisited 1965 and Blonde
  15. on Blonde 1966, are often cited as his best
  16. work. His meaningful (but increasingly
  17. obscure) lyrics provided catchphrases for a
  18. generation and influenced innumerable
  19. songwriters.
